Summer Wind Farms Sanctuary was established a USDA licensed 501(c)(3) organization in 1992 by Charles Vanneste when he rescued his first lion. He discovered he had a passion for working with exotic animals, and converted his 200-acre farm in Brown City, Michigan, to a facility with the intention of providing proper care for the handful of exotic animals that lived there.
Our mission is to provide a haven where exotic mammals, reptiles, and birds can live out their lives in a safe, well-cared for environment. We also provide the public a rare opportunity to be educated by seeing these animals up-close during our private tours of the facility.
We have rescued animals from across the Midwest. Many of the animals we take in are victims of abuse or acquired illegally, and are from private owners, hunting facilities, and breeding mills. Others are retired mascots and movie stars, or are from closed down zoos and other sanctuaries. We provide a haven for these animals that would have otherwise been euthanized.
